Skatter is us, a mother & daughter and our shop. Our Grandmother/Great-Grandmother (respectively) was from North Dakota with a Norwegian heritage. Her parents spoke fluent Norwegian and she did also. As a child, Norwegian was part of her curriculum at school. (We still have her Norwegian textbooks!) So, we remember Grandma teaching us the please & thank you's in Norwegian. Of course, her most common Norse expression was Uff Da!
When it came time to choose a business name that would be a little different from other shops it seemed obvious to translate something into Norwegian. We thought of a lot of different words and came up with Treasure, since sometimes we really do feel like treasure hunters. We looked it up in one of Grandma's textbooks and it translated into skatter. We loved it! Now the ironic part is that we did not check the translation any where else and we have since discovered skatter can also mean taxes. We're sticking with the treasure interpretation.
