At this point in the story you find out how crazy we are: Two was injured but still alive. We called all over our county but could not find a vet on duty that would help a chicken. We ended up about an hour away at For The Birds. Two responded well to treatment: antibiotics, pain med, oxygen, suture of a gash. But she could not survive the puncture wound to her trachea.
This experience made my 4 year old granddaughter think about where chicken meat comes from. She now refuses to eat it, "it might be someone's pet". As soon as she thinks about this more I'm betting we have a vegetarian on our hands.
We have since repaired all of the fence. I think it's impenetrable. And we haven't lost any more chickens. But I went for overkill and built a completely enclosed run for them.
I'm also thinking if I had to survive without the grocery store I would starve!
